| Beschreibung: | Next up is the LSA WestFest taking place from August 6 -12, at the University of Victoria located on lovely Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. There are lots of exciting and new happenings at the LSA Workshop West this year! First, it will take place at the University of Victoria on Vancouver Island, and this year the faculty will include Robert Barto, Elizabeth Kenny, Sylvain Bergeron, lecturer Ray Nurse, lecturer Douglas Alton Smith, luthier Travis Carey, and Phillip Rukavina. Here’s just a taste of the interesting subjects to be covered at this event. Baroque lutenist Robert Barto will be presenting a lute masterclass as well as a course on the Joy of German Tablature. English lutenist Elizabeth Kenny will help us learn to get around on the theorbo in both solo and continuo contexts via her course titled Taming the Beast. Liz will also look into the subject of improvisation on the lute in her course Beyond the Notes. In his Playing With Attitude, Canadian lutenist Sylvain Bergeron will provide an overview of approaches to the lute that offer higher levels of security, even to the point of giving players a sense of control and even attitude! Canadian luthier Travis Carey will offer a week of full day classes on the Art of Building a Lute. We’ll cover all the major topics and skills involved in building a lute, from creating a working drawing and making a mold, to bending ribs and carving a rose. Everyone is invited to attend! Program director Phil Rukavina will be offering a class on the very Basics of Lute Playing. If you’ve taken so-called called “beginning” lute classes in the past and have found yourself floundering in a sea of mind numbing details, this is the course for you! Vancouver-based lute guru, Ray Nurse will charm all with his insight into various aspects of the lute and it’s history via two engaging lectures during the week. Last, but definitely not least, musicologist and lutenist Douglas Alton Smith will offer an overview of the lute thoughts and teachings of our late friend and lute colleague Pat O’Brien through films of his teaching and other personal sources. The event begins with 2:00 pm check-in on Sunday, August 6 and classes run through Friday, August 11. Events include faculty concerts and loads of great classes Departure date is Saturday, August 12. Please note that flights directly to Victoria, BC are comparable in cost to flights to Vancouver, BC. Tuition cost for LSA members is $560. Room and board for the week is $650.
